How to Play Brick Breaker
Brick Breaker is a game of angles and nerve. Move the paddle, launch the ball, clear every breakable brick, catch power-up capsules, and ride your combo through levels that never stop.
Play Brick BreakerThe objective
Clear every brick, then do it again
Brick Breaker puts a wall of bricks at the top of the screen and a paddle at the bottom. You keep a single ball bouncing between them, aiming it into the wall until every breakable brick is gone, which clears the level.
There is no final level. Layouts keep coming, growing denser and faster, with more tough and indestructible bricks. Your run ends only when you lose your last life, so the score and the deepest level you reach are what you are playing for.
The game is free, runs in the browser, and needs no account. Open the board when you want to play; use this guide for the controls, the brick and power-up types, scoring, and the habits that push your score higher.
Controls
Mouse, touch, or keyboard
Every method moves the same paddle. Pick whichever fits the device in your hand.
Everywhere
Mouse or touch
Move the pointer or drag your finger across the play area and the paddle tracks it directly. Click or tap to launch the ball. This is the most precise way to play on both desktop and phone.
Desktop
Keyboard
Left and right arrow keys — or A and D — slide the paddle. Space launches the ball. P pauses, M mutes the sound, and R starts a new run.
Any device
Pause and restart
The game auto-pauses when the tab loses focus. Use the on-screen pause and new-game buttons in the HUD at any time; a new run restarts instantly with no page reload.
The loop
Four beats you repeat every level
Launch, keep the ball alive, clear the wall, catch what falls. That is the whole game.
- 1
Launch the ball
Every level starts with the ball resting on the paddle. Move the paddle to line up your first shot, then click, tap, or press Space to send the ball into the wall of bricks above.
- 2
Keep the ball alive
The ball bounces off the walls, the bricks, and your paddle. Slide the paddle left and right to catch it on the way down. If it slips past the paddle and off the bottom of the screen, you lose a life.
- 3
Clear every breakable brick
Normal bricks break in one hit. Tough bricks show a number and take that many hits. Solid grey bricks never break — you have to play around them. The level is done when every breakable brick is gone.
- 4
Catch power-ups and advance
Some bricks drop a falling capsule. Catch it with the paddle for a wider paddle, a slower ball, a three-ball split, or an extra life. Clear the level for a bonus, then the next layout loads automatically — the levels never run out.
Brick types
Know what you are hitting
Normal brick
Breaks in a single hit and is worth the base points. Most of every wall is made of these, coloured by row.
Tough brick
Marked with a number — 2 or 3 — showing how many hits it still needs. It darkens as it takes damage and is worth more points when it finally breaks.
Solid brick
The grey riveted blocks are indestructible. The ball bounces off them exactly like a wall, so you have to thread shots around them to reach what is behind.
Power-up brick
Looks like a normal brick but releases a falling capsule when destroyed. Every capsule is a bonus — the only question is whether you can get the paddle under it in time.
Power-ups
Catch the falling capsules
Some bricks drop a capsule when destroyed. Slide the paddle under it to trigger the effect — every one is a bonus.
- W
Wide paddle
Widens the paddle for about fourteen seconds, making the ball far easier to keep in play. Catching another one refreshes the timer.
- 3
Multi-ball
Splits every ball in play into three. More balls clear bricks faster and build bigger combos, but you are now tracking several bounces at once.
- S
Slow ball
Drops every ball to about two-thirds speed for roughly twelve seconds. Useful for lining up a tricky angle or recovering after a scramble.
- +
Extra life
Adds one life, up to a maximum of five. The rarest capsule, and the reason it is often worth taking a risk to reach one.
Rules & scoring
Every rule that decides a run
The objective
Destroy every breakable brick in a level to clear it. There is no final level — layouts keep coming and get denser, tougher, and faster, so the real goal is the highest score and deepest level you can reach.
Lives
You start with three lives. Losing the last ball off the bottom of the screen costs one life and drops any active timed power-ups. At zero lives the run ends. The extra-life capsule can push you back up to five.
The paddle bounce
Where the ball strikes the paddle sets its rebound angle. A hit near the centre sends it almost straight up; a hit near an edge sends it out at a sharp angle. This is your main steering tool.
Scoring and combos
Chipping a tough brick scores a little; destroying a brick scores more, multiplied by a combo that grows with each brick you break. The combo resets the instant the ball touches the paddle or you lose a life, so long uninterrupted runs are worth the most.
Level clear bonus
Clearing a level adds a bonus that scales with the level number, then the next layout loads automatically after a short breather.
Common mistakes
Why good runs end early
Chasing the ball
Reacting to where the ball is now means you are always a step behind. Track where it will come down and have the paddle waiting there.
Always bouncing from the centre
A dead-centre hit gives a predictable near-vertical bounce, which is fine — but it also means you never deliberately attack the sides. Learn to use edge hits on purpose.
Diving for every capsule
Leaving the ball to grab a low-value power-up is how good runs end. Weigh the capsule against the position of the ball before you commit.
Panicking during multi-ball
Three balls look chaotic, so players flail the paddle and miss all of them. Slow down, cover the middle, and accept losing one rather than losing the lot.
- Aim with the paddle, not with hope — move under the ball early so you choose the contact point instead of lunging for it.
- Hit the ball with the edge of the paddle to steer it sideways into a stubborn column; use the centre when you just need it to go up.
- Dig a narrow channel up one side of the wall. Once the ball is above the bricks it clears whole rows on its own while you rest the paddle.
- Tough and solid bricks are obstacles, not targets. Route the ball past them toward the breakable bricks they are protecting.
- Not every power-up is worth a risky sprint. Wide paddle and extra life almost always are; multi-ball is great with space but risky when the wall is nearly clear.
- When multi-ball splits, watch the group, not one ball. Keep the paddle near the centre and make small corrections.
- Grab slow ball before you line up a hard angle, and use the calm to reposition rather than to force a shot.
